About Heart of Columbia Chorus

Being passionate about singing is what this organization thrives on. We are real women, singing real harmony, making real friendships, and having real fun! You can too!

The HEART OF COLUMBIA CHORUS is a chapter of Sweet Adelines International. We received our official charter on December 10, 2008 - with 47 members!

We are a group of female singers who began rehearsing in September 2007. The membership is a diverse group of women from many walks of life. We have career women, retired women, students, stay at home moms and grandmothers. Our ages span seven decades. Music is our common bond. A capella, four-part harmony in the barbershop style is what we do.

Sweet Adelines International, our parent organization, began in 1945 when a small group of women got together to sing four-part harmony. Today the organization has grown to 30,000 women world wide. We are a member of Region 14 of Sweet Adelines International.

We sing under the direction of Virginia King, a long time honored member of Sweet Adelines.

The goal of HEART OF COLUMBIA CHORUS is to sing well (always improving through music education), perform often, and have fun. It is our sincere desire to serve our community while sharing our love of music.

Come visit the HEART OF COLUMBIA CHORUS any Thursday evening.

Performance

The main purpose of HEART OF COLUMBIA CHORUS is to get out and sing for our community. We sing at annual shows,  community events, and at an annual competition. A few the members got together and formed a smaller group who could sing for the community during daytime hours, or when space cannot accommodate the full chorus.  The 10-12 member group is appropriately named, "Merry Hearts" who truly believe that music is good medicine. We also perform Singing Telegrams for Valentines Day. We are available to sing at your next function or event. If you're looking for a unique musical experience to liven up your event, please check out our Hire Us section.

Education

In addition to sharing our music with others, another great passion of ours is learning more about the art of a capella singing. Vocal instruction is a regular part of chorus rehearsals and a very important component of the chorus experience. A couple of times a year we receive coaching from a visiting master in the art of barbershop, and we learn many unique methods to fine tune our singing skills.

CompetitionIn the spring of each year, HEART OF COLUMBIA CHORUS participates in Region 14 chorus competition. This is a special time for quartets and choruses from our region to come together to sing for each other and get some constructive feedback from a panel of judges. The winners of the regional competition in both quartet and chorus categories get to travel to International Competition, which is held in the fall.  In 2012, International Competition will be held in Denver, CO. Click here to learn more.

Quartets

Most choruses have a number of members who form their own vocal quartets in addition to singing with the chorus. HEART OF COLUMBIA CHORUS currently is home to a number of wonderful quartets, and we are very proud of them! Click here to see our quartet section to learn more about them.
